Fernie, located in the stunning Elk
Valley in the Canadian Rockies,
is renowned
for its excellent powder snow. The Fernie Alpine
Resort has an average snowfall of 8.75m (29ft)
per annum, and with five
huge
bowls,
countless glades and chutes, Fernie has become
a popular skiing and snowboarding destination.
Whilst in summer, when the winter snows
melt and the rivers flow fast and furious the Fernie
area offers whitewater rafting and kayaking as well
as being well known for its fly-fishing and
golf, or hiking and mountain biking through
the 900 year old old growth cedar trees at the Cedar
Valley Old Growth
Reserve.
Whilst visiting Fernie watch out for
the ghostrider. According to local legend, William
Fernie, who brought
coal mining to the valley courted the daughter
of a local First Nations chief purely
to discover the source of the black stones she
wore on her necklace. Once Fernie found the coal
seam, he had been seeking he deserted
the Indian princess. in revenge a curse was placed
on the
valley. Although the curse was lifted sometime ago,
the legend of the Ghostrider remains and when shadows
fall across the face of Mount Hosmer in summer, they
say you can see two ghostly figures, one riding on
horseback, said to be the Indian chief and his daughter.
Fernie is famous for its powder snow.
With a huge annual snowfall, there is always plenty
to do no

summer in fact the summer months offer a wide range
of activities
fro the whole family including: fishing, golf, hiking,
mountain biking, skateboarding, boating and whitewater
rafting.
Aquatic Centre
Whether you have had a hard day skiing, hiking or shopping the Fernie aquatic
centre is the place to go. The Aquatic Centre offers a large pool, diving board,
children's pool, a slide, 20 person hot tub, and a steam room.
Fishing
For anglers Fernie offers river fishing and several
lakes.
One
of the
most
popular
fishing spots is the Elk River and its tributaries
which are well stocked with Cutthroat and Bull Trout.
Golf
For the golfing enthusiasts a visit to the 18-hole Fernie Golf & Country
Club is a must. The golf course is well known for its panoramic mountain views
and tree lined fairways.
Ice Skating
The Fernie Memorial Arena offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely
skate with the family or the opportunity to watch the local teams in a hard
fast game of ice hockey. Mountain Biking
Fernie is one of Canada's premier
mountain biking destinations. The backcountry
trails range
from an easy country side ride, to intermediate
rides through historic townsites, to challenging
steeps
on the expert rated Ich Bin Sofa Trail. Or you can
venture on to the challenging runs at Fernie
Alpine Resort. Ride the chairlift up and let the
adrenalin loose on a ride down Kodiak Karnage
or Top Gun.
Parks & Wildlife
Fernie's natural beauty is stunning.
Visit the Mount Fernie
Provincial Park for the opportunity to see wildflowers,
waterfalls and 900 year old
old growth cedar trees at the Cedar Valley Old Growth
Reserve. There are 400 year old cottonwood trees
close to town just along a short walking trail.
Wildlife abounds in the area including Elk, White-tailed
and
Mule Deer,
Black and Grizzly Bears, Bald and Golden Eagles.
The nearby town of Elkford offers the chance to
see dinosaur fossils and footprints.
Shopping
Fernie has a spectacular selection of shops and services that
will succumb even the most discerning shopper. Enjoy either the Alpine Resort
retailers or the old world charm of
of Fernie's downtown shopping precinct.
Sparwood
The mining town of Sparwood has the world's largest
tandem axle dump truck
- Terex Titan. The Terex Titan measures 20m (66ft)
long,
8m (26ft)
wide and 7m (23 ft) to the top of the canopy. Each
tyre weighs 8000 lbs (4 tons) and measures 3.4 m
(11ft) in diameter. It was brought to Sparwood
in 1978 to work the mines and ceased operating
in 1990 because it was found to no longer be
cost efficient. The massive truck is located
near the Sparwood Visitor centre.
Fernie has its own micro-climate due to the
local topography of mountains and valleys. In winter
you can expect substantial snowfalls of around 360
cm in town, 875 cm on the ski hill and there is a
plentiful rainfall from spring through
to fall to keep the valley
looking green and lush.
Temperatures during
winter average at about -11c and summer time you
can expect daytime averages of about +25c.
By Car
Fernie is located in the south eastern
corner of the BC Rocky Mountains on Highway No.
3 within driving distance of three
major airports, Calgary International Airport (266km
or 203 miles), Glacier Park International
Airport in Kalispell, Montana (188km
or 117 mile drive) and Cranbrook Airport (100km
or 56 miles) from Fernie.
By Air
Calgary International Airport is about a 3.5 hour
drive. The airport offers regular services from
most major North American and European
cities.
Cranbrook BC is a 1.25 hour drive and regional air
services including Air Canada and Pacific
Coast Airlines provide regular flights from major
Canadian destinations to Cranbrook.
By Bus
Regular bus services operate
from Fernie to the Calgary airport from December
to April. Mountain Perks bus service also offers
a shuttle service between Fernie and Calgary airport
year round,
as well as providing private shuttles for groups
and special events to destinations throughout the
Canadian Rockies.

Kootenay Taxi
services provide local transportation including
taxi service and passenger buses to the alpine
resort and around town.
