The Grand Hotel is one of Yarra Glen's most impressive
buildings. It was constructed
in 1888 and has a four storey tower at one end,
a masonry arcade along the street frontage, a cast-iron
verandah
and a parapet. The hotel operates as the cellar
door of the Yarra Glen Vineyard.
Gulf Station
Gulf Station was established as a 7000 ha grazing
lease in 1847. It is believed that William Bell
and his
brother-in-law Thomas Armstrong took over the
property in 1857. It remained in
the family until after World War II when most
of the land was sold off. Today on
16 ha remain but the original buildings
have changed little. The ten timber slab farm buildings
dating from the late 1850s and/or 1860s
are basically intact and are considered of great
architectural interest. They are classified by
the National Trust for the strong insight they
give
into 19th-century
Australian architecture and farm life.
