Wodonga, often referred to along with
it twin border city as Albury-Wodonga, lies along
the southern side the great Murray River on Victorian
side of the New South Wales Victoria border. Wodonga
is
located
on the Hume Highway, which connects Sydney to Melbourne.
Wodonga and Albury lie just 7 kms apart
on either side of the Murray River and together they
have of Australia largest
inland
populations. Wodonga originally known as Belvoir and
later renamed to Wodonga in 1874 became an important
river port for the Ovens goldfield during the gold
rush in Victoria, following the end to the gold era
it became a major stock selling and
shipping centres with a large inland port.
Hume and Hovell explored the area in
1824 and named the river the Hume which was later renamed
by Charles Sturt, however where Hume and Hovell crossed
the Murray has become the the
Hume
Weir.
Albury Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens were created in 1871 and has some interesting trees on
display including a 30m Queensland Kauri tree, several river red gums grown
from seeds of the Hovell
Tree
and a pine
which grew from a seed taken at Lone Pine in Gallipoli. The Hume Monument
is also located in the gardens.
Albury Railway Station
The Albury Railway Station is a major architectural
feature of the town with its Italianate red and
white brick building. It was constructed in 1881
and
has a 22 metre clock tower, original cedar joinery and a cast iron platform
with fluted columns. The railway station boasts the third longest platform
in Australia. The length of the platform came about due to the fact that
it use to be the change over point for passengers
and freight travelling from
Victoria to New South Wales. Until 1962 the two states ran different gauges
so the trains could not pass their own borders. The station master's residence
is also worth a visit.
Albury Regional Art Centre
The Albury Regional Art Centre is located in an ornate and virtually
unaltered Edwardian town hall which was built in 1907 with
extravagant stucco. It contains an impressive collection of works of art by
Sir Russell
Drysdale.
Lake Hume
Lake Hume is a popular spot for
swimming, sailing, water skiing, paragliding, fishing,
wind surfing, jet skiing, kayaking and canoeing. There
are picnic and barbecue facilities along with a
children's playground.
Murray River
The Murray River provides the stat border between Victoria
and New South Wales. The river is popular with water
skiers and fishermen.
National Museum of Australian Pottery
Located in South St, the National Museum of Australian
Pottery features a collection of
19th-century Australian pottery.
Paddle Steamer P.S. Cumberoona
The P.S. Cumberoona is a replica of an 1886 paddle steamer which once used
to visit Albury. It offers offers one hour tours of the Murray every day
in season.
Near its mooring point in Noreuil Park, Albury, there is a reproduction Cobb & Co.
coach.
RAAOC Museum
Located just a short 5 km drive at Bandiana is the RAAOC Museum. The museum has
a large collection of Australian history pieces. BBQ and picnic facilities
are also available along with a children's playground. Sumsion Gardens
Sumsion Gardens in High St offers a wonderful location
to enjoy a picnic The gardens has a lake,
BBQ facilities, picnic area, bird life, walking
trails and a children's playground.
The Hume Dam
The Hume Dam, is located 16 km east of Albury and was
built between the first and second World Wars. At
the time of its construction it was the largest dam
in the southern hemisphere and one of the world's
largest. It has a surface area is 20 190 ha, with
a total length of 1.6 km and a capacity of nearly
three million
megalitres. The dam is encompassed by
343 km of shoreline. There are 29 regulating gates,
and a hydro-electric
station.
The town
of Wodonga has four distinct seasons. The summers are
dry and clear,
autumns
and springs are
mild, while the winters bring snow to the nearby
mountains. The average maximum
temperature in summer is 34 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius in
winter.
By Air
Regular flights are available from Sydney, Canberra,
Melbourne and many regional centres to Albury.
By Train
Regular services operate from both Melbourne to Sydney via Albury and Wodonga
By Bus/Coach
Daily coach services operate between Sydney and Melbourne stopping
in Albury and Wodonga
By Car
Wodonga is 3 hours from Melbourne and
Canberra and 6 hours from Sydney via the Hume Highway.
