About Porepunkah
Porepunkah is a small village
located on the Great Alpine Road, right at the foot
of Mt Buffalo. Porepunkah offers the perfect holiday
base to enjoy the Mt Buffalo National Park, the peaceful
Buckland Valley, and trout fishing in the Oven and
Buckland rivers. With
its close
proximity to Bright, Porepunkah can offer easy access
to the ski fields of Falls
Creek and Hotham, and the
beautiful gardens in the Bright area.
Porepunkah has a lovely park with shady
riverbanks, playground, swimming holes, picnic
tables and riverside walks making it just ideal for
families. The Porepunkah river
walk follows
along side the river. The 45 minute walk crosses
over a swing bridge and returns via the Rail Trail.
If it is adventure you are looking for
on your vacation the Porepunkah can offer paragliding,
hang gliding and micro light flights. Tandem
flights micro-light
flights are available year round at Porepunkah airfield,
whilst the gliding is only available from spring to
autumn
due to its
reliance on relies on warm
air currents. The flights and gliding offer spectacular
views over the valley.
Porepunkah was discovered by Hume & Hovell,
in 1824. By 1837 a cattle run between present day Myrtleford
to Eurobin was established. The gold rush in the nearby
Buckland Valley in the 1850’s saw a large
number of miners flood the area. The miners had to
pas through Porepunkah (originally known as Oven's
Crossing) to get to the new gold fields.
Things to do and see
Apex Riverside Park
Porepunkah's riverside park offers picnic areas, a playground and walking trails
along side the Ovens river. From Christmas to Easter you can enjoy a swim in
a safe river swimming pool when the river is dammed.
Buckland
Valley
The drive from Porepunkah to Buckland Valley passes
the airfield Porepunkah airfield from where you
can take a tandem micro-light flight and on through
apple orchards,
olive
groves
and nut
farms.
Several farms sell their produce at the farm gate.
Mount Buffalo
The Mount Buffalo National Park offers a wide range
of activities year round.
Wineries
There is about a dozen wineries are dotted through
the surrounding valleys and towns, including Porepunkah,
Myrtleford, Tawonga, Tawonga South, Eurobin, Gapsted,
Rosewhite, Kancoona South and Mongans Bridge in the
Kiewa Valley.
A number have cellar doors and invite you to try their
wines with local cheese and antipasto platters, traditional
Tuscan food or a menu created around seasonal local
produce.
Climate
SUMMER
With an average maximum temperature of 29 degrees celsius and average minimum
of 10 degrees celsius summer is the ideal time to enjoy a picnic, bush walking,
mountain biking, swimming and trout fishing.
AUTUMN
The maximum temperature is 21 degrees celsius and the minimum 4 degrees celsius.
The air turns crisp and the grapes are harvested. Log fires start to burn
and the autumn
trees
put
on
their exquisite display of colour.
WINTER
The maximum temperature is 13.5 degrees celsius and the minimum 1.5 degrees
celsius. Winter is when skiers and snowboarders head for the surrounding
alps to enjoy
the
magical playground of snow. If you are not a skier why not come and enjoy
a romantic weekend in front of a log fire.
SPRING
The maximum temperature is 24 degrees celsius and the minimum 3.5 degrees celsius.
Spring heralds the melting snow, the rivers swell creating a paradise for
white
water rafters, kayakers and canoeists. The local orchards display their
spring blossom and the trees burst with bright green new foliage.
Getting There
By Air
Tullamarine in Melbourne is the closest international airport. Albury Airport,
which is located ten minutes from the centre of Albury and about 1 hour 30
minutes from the Porepunkah, operates multiple flights daily from
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and various other regional centres. Rex Airlines,
Qantas Link and Brindabella Airlines offer services to Albury. During winter
limited services are also available to Mt Hotham.
By Car
Porepunkah is approximately 3 hours 40 minutes from Melbourne. Take the Hume
Highway towards Wangaratta. Turn off at Great Alpine Road, which is just
outside Glenrowan. Follow the great Alpine Road to Porepunkah.
By Train
A regular train service operates from Melbourne's
Spencer Street Station to Wangaratta. From Wangaratta
there are several bus connections that operate
to Porepunkah.
