About Harrietville
The picturesque small sub-alpine town
of Harrietville is located on the Great Alpine Road
38kms from Bright and 20kms from Mt Hotham. Located
just 330 km north-east of Melbourne, at the foot
of the slopes of the Ovens Valley, Harrietville is
protected from the harsh summer and winter weather.
It is surrounded by the Alpine National
Park which provides year round activities.
Harrietville is a former gold mining
town steeped in history. It was settled in 1852 by
gold miners and became a resting place for those
en-route to the Omeo and Glen Wills goldfields.
Reef gold mining began in the area
in 1861 after the alluvial gold became scarce. At
one point 348 official reefs were operating. Later
dredging began as the reefs became unviable. Small
miners' cottages remain today as a reminder of days
gone by.
Harrietville in Winter
Harrietville is a popular place to
stay for skiers and snowboarders in winter with Mt
Hotham only a short drive away. Relax beside an open
fire after a strenuous days skiing. If skiing is
not your thing, enjoy a walk or fishing in a mountain
stream or a quiet romantic weekend away from the
hustle of the city.
Harrietville in Summer
Harrietville's proximity to the Ovens
River makes it the perfect place for fishermen, or
enjoy a swim at one of the local rivers or water
holes on a summers afternoon.
A variety of open markets and festivals
are held throughout the year, or explore one of the
old gold mine trails, try a touch of gold panning
or a hike along the high country cattle trails. Harrietville
is the ideal base for mountain biking, bush walking
or alpine hiking, horse riding, 4wd driving, or mountain
stream fishing.
