Almost every town in the Goldfields region has some legacy of the gold rush that occurred in central Victoria in the 1850's. Examples include the impressive Victorian streetscapes of Bendigo and Ballarat with grand hotels and public buildings to quaint shopfronts and miners' cottages in the rural towns of Maldon and Castlemaine.
The region offers visitors many opportunities to experience the gold rush including Sovereign Hill, an outdoor museum, where you can step back in time into the 1850s and 1860s, and the Central Deborah Gold Mine where you can travel underground into an old gold mine.
Relax in one of the many cafes, or splendid botanical gardens. The Goldfields region also offers fabulous art galleries featuring local and European painting, festivals, wine tasting and fresh local produce.
