About Castlemaine
Castlemaine was once the richest alluvial goldfield in the world and from 1851 Castlemaine attracted tens of thousands of prospectors who came in the hope of finding their fortune.
Located between Ballarat and Bendigo in a valley just 120km north west of Melbourne, today Castlemaine is a vibrant rural village that thrives on agriculture, arts and tourism.
Castlemaine has retained many magnificent historical buildings from its former gold rush days including include the Theatre Royal (1857), the Castlemaine Market (1862), the red-brick town hall (1898) and courthouse (1889), along with several historic churches and hotels.
Places to visit in Castlemaine
Burke and Wills Monument
The Burke and Wills monument is located at the eastern end of Mostyn Street. It was erected in 1862 to honour their death. The monument offers visitors wonderful views of the town centre.
Castlemaine Botanical Gardens
Castlemaine Botanical Gardens are recognised as one of Victoria's oldest public gardens, dating to 1860, when 25 hectares of gold diggings along Barkers Creek were set aside for the gardens. The Castlemaine Botanical Gardens feature old oak and elm trees, colourful flower gardens, a rotunda and Lake Joanna.
Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park
The Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park is located at the south and east side of Castlemaine. They cover 7,500 hectares and includes relics of the gold mining era.
