About Bendigo

Bendigo is the fourth largest town in Victoria and is located about 150km from Melbourne in the goldfields region of central Victoria.

Originally known as Bendigo's Creek after an employee on a local property who was nicknamed "Bendigo" after English prize fighter William "Bendigo" Thompson.

Bendigo grew rapidly during the 1850's gold rush and today still retains much of its history in its many magnificent ornate buildings.

Bendigo offers visitors a wide variety of attractions including the authentic deep-shaft mine at Central Deborah, where you have the opportunity to go underground in a miners’ cage, there is also the famous Vintage Talking Tram Tour, original 1860’s Chinese Joss House and the Golden Dragon Museum.

For those who like to get their adrenalin going Bendigo's Discovery Science & Technology Centre is home to Australia’s highest Vertical Slide at and many other attractions can be found at Life Adventure Park.

Other activities in the Bendigo area include cycling, bush walking through Whipstick Forest, gold fossicking and visiting wineries.

Australian Sheepbreeders Association
The Australian Sheepbreeders Association has shows that feature 28 different breeds of sheep, goats and alpacas, shearing and wool handling competitions, an Australian Fleece competition, a Woolcraft Competition and Fashion parades

Bendigo Art Gallery
Founded in 1887 the Bendigo Art Gallery is one of Australia’s largest and oldest regional art galleries. The collections include Australian Art from the 1850s to present day and includes a special collection of art from the Bendigo goldfields along with 19th century European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.

Bendigo Jockey Club
Bendigo Jockey Club is regional Victoria's Premier Racecourse and conducts 25 race meetings per season, including a Ladies Day, Breeders Raceday and the Bendigo Cup.

Bendigo Pottery
Experience the history and craft of Australia's oldest working pottery. The pottery is set around a complex of vast old beehive kilns and offers visitors demonstrations, hands on activities with clay and interpretive displays.

Bendigo Tramways Vintage 'Talking' Tram
The Vintage 'Talking' Tram weaves its way around Bendigo with a commentary about the grand architecture and the cit's history. Bendigo's tramway system dates back to 1890, when trams were used as a major source of public transportation.

Buda Historic Home & Garden
Buda Historic Home & Garden is open to the public and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the Leviny home and their collection of art and craft including silverwork and jewellery designs by Ernest Leviny and artworks including embroidery, metal craft, photography and woodwork by the five daughters. There are also art works of many prominent Australian artists including Margaret Preston, M J McNally, Ursula Ridley Walker and Lionel Lindsay. The garden covers the 1.2 hectares with elaborate Victorian style flower beds and a formal garden.

The Capital - Bendigo's Performing Arts Centre
This grand building has towering Corinthian columns and an interior that has been restored to its original Victorian grandeur. The Capital hosts some of the best live theatre, musical, dance and comedy in Australia.

Golden Dragon Museum
The Golden Dragon Museum is a living history of the Chinese people of Bendigo from the goldrush of the 1850’s to the present day. It has become the hub of Chinese cultural activity in Australia and features Chinese arts and crafts and the Yi Yuan (Garden of Joy) which is based on the Imperial Palace in Beijing. There is also a Buddhist Temple, the Guan Yin Miao (temple of The Goddess of Mercy) in the gardens.

Victorian Goldfields Railway
Relive the classic steam era with a trip on the Victorian Goldfields Railway. The steam train links the historic towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
