Barnawartha
is a small, historic village, which is nestled in
a scenic valley. Located just off the Hume Highway,
the main highway between Chiltern
and Wodonga in north-eastern Victoria, Barnawartha
is the ideal stop over to break the long drive from
Sydney to Melbourne.
Barnawartha was popular during the
1850's gold rush and many of the historic buildings
in the village date back to this period. The village
includes several historical buildings including
the Star Hotel, general store, town hall and post
office.
The Sacred Heart church was established in 1899 and
situated across the road from the town's golf course.
There are ideal picnic
spots in the
Indigo Creek Park which also offers BBQ shelters
and a walking track.The park fronts on to the
Indigo Creek.
Murray River
Just a very short drive north of Barnawartha is
the Murray River, where you can enjoy, picnics
and several water sports including water skiing.
Scenic Drives
There are a couple of lovely
drives which are well worth taking in the Barnawartha
area. Firstly the Indigo Creek Road
follows
along side Indigo
Creek to the south east through grazing land
to the outskirts of Yackandandah and then passes
along side the mountain
ranges of the Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park.
The second drive takes you along Oates
Gap Road, the
road rises and bends sharply as it straddles
the
mountain range which is part of Mount Lady Franklin
and provides excellent elevated views of Barnawartha's
surrounding countryside. Wineries
North west of Barnawartha you will find numerous
wineries surrounding the neighbouring
area of Rutherglen. Many of the wineries have cellar
doors.

By Car
Located 290 kms north-east of Melbourne,
Barnawartha is easily accessed by car via the Hume
Highway
which is the major highway connecting Sydney and
Melbourne.
By Air
There are are regular air services from Melbourne
and Sydney to Albury (NSW) airport which is about
30 kms away.
By Train
There are 2 nearby passenger railway stations
Chiltern - 10 kms and Wodonga - 22 kms
Koendidda, an historic
mansion, was built during the gold rush and is
set in a beautiful garden. Koendidda County House
has been tastefully restored and
now operates
as a bed & breakfast.
