About Ulverstone
Located just 19 km west of Devonport, Ulverstone sits on the mouth of the Leven River and it is a very popular tourist destination.
The area was very popular for its forests from 1848 and after the forest was removed the rich volcanic soils became ideal potato farms and dairy cattle.
Named after Ulverston in Lancashire, England, there are many things to see.
Places to visit around Ulverstone
Local Museum - It has a fascinating collection of business facades including a blacksmith and wheelwright, a shoemaker and several other shop fronts.
Braddons Lookout - offers wonderful views of the coast and hinterlands.
Gunns Plains Caves - located 23 km from Ulverstone the caves are well illuminated.
Leven Canyon - is a popular tourist destination which offers visitors bush walking trails, and views down the 250 metre Leven Canyon. It takes ten hours to walk through the gorge. There are good picnic and barbeque facilities.
The Gables and Turners Beach - The Gables House was built around 1850, and was originally known as The Sailors Return Inn.
Westella and Lonah - located on the eastern side of town is Westella, a gorgeous, historical, gabled house. Westella is a fine example of the houses built from 1880-1920 using the superb, fine quality local timbers. Another example is Lonah which overlooks Three Sisters Island, built by Major-General Lodder, a retired English soldier, around 1875.
