About Franklin
Franklin is located 35 minutes south
of Hobart in the Huon Valley on the A6 highway.
It is the ideal stop over on the way to the Tahune
Airwalk and Hastings Caves.
Franklin, lying on the banks of
the beautiful Huon River has that lovely village
atmosphere that is becoming harder to find.
Whilst visiting Franklin enjoy the
restaurants, antique and craft shops, the world
famous Wooden Boat Centre. The main street has
some beautifully restored timber buildings, several
featuring huon pine, for which the valley is named.
Franklin became an important settlement
after Lady Jane Franklin (the wife of Sir John
Franklin, Governor of Van Diemen's Land - 1836-43)
bought and distributed land to poor in 1839. Lady
Franklin personally interviewed every applicant
before handing over the 100 acre allotments.
