Bicheno is a charming coastal town located on the picturesque Tasmanian East Coast about 180 Km from Hobart. Bicheno is a popular tourist destination with its fishing, clean safe beaches and coastal walking tracks it is an ideal family summer holiday destination. Formerly known as Waubs Boat Harbour, Bicheno became a whaling town in 1803. Today Bicheno is better known for its fishing industry, with the local catch including abalone, crayfish, scallops and trevally. If you enjoy dining on fresh seafood then Bicheno won't disappoint you.
Places to Visit
East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park
Located on the northern side of Bicheno, The East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park, offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to see some of the diverse wildlife of the East Coast region including Tasmanian devils, Cape Barren Geese, Forester kangaroos and Bennett's wallabies.
Diamond Island Nature Reserve
This wonderful reserve is a haven to vast numbers of fairy penguins. Diamond Island lies close to the coast of Bicheno, in fact it is so close that during low tide it is possible to walk to the island.
Douglas-Apsley National Park
Known for its waterfalls, eucalypts, rainforest, and river gorges. The southern entrance to Douglas–Apsley is only three kilometres north of Bicheno. Prior to becoming a National Park the area was used for a vast number of uses including farming, mining and trapping. Today its offers visitors a diverse range of plants and animals.
Rocking Rock is a large granite boulder that is balanced in such a way that it rocks with the movement of the tide. The local blowhole can also be seen here.
The Sea Life Centre
Located near The East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park, The Sea Life Centre displays many of the fish species found in the local waters along the East Coast including eels, seahorses, scalefish and crayfish. The centre also includes artifacts from sailing vessels such as the anchor from the barque Otago and the masts of the coastal trader Enterprise.
Bicheno has a mild climate, with an average maximum of 21 degrees Celsius in Summer and 14.5 degrees Celsius in Winter.
Bicheno is located 176 kilometres north-east of Hobart and can be easily reached by car along the Tasman Highway.
