Pokolbin is located in the heart of the Hunter Valley. This area is well known for its world class wines with several being well over one hundred years old. Pokolbin is Australia's oldest commercial Wine Producing Area with many large and small boutique wineries.

The vineyards of the Lower Hunter a paradise for wine lovers. It is a picturesque area with vines covering the rolling green hills. And for those who have no interest in viticulture there are many tourist activities apart from wine tasting available including browsing quaint antique shops, sampling the local produce in the many fine restaurants, hot air ballooning, wine tasting, golf and horse riding.

Pokolbin is not a town as such. There is no central point and it is more an area bisected by a number of roads along which house picturesque vineyards and complimentary businesses, including accommodation, restaurants, galleries, nurseries, and gift shops.

Vineyards began to become a serious business in Pokolbin from the late 1870s but the depression of the 1890s dealt the industry a blow which was further crippled by the influx of cheaper wine from South Australia. It was not until the 1960s that the wine industry of the Lower Hunter really began to boom.

The area's wineries and other venues are very well sign posted at every major intersection. Maps of the vineyard locations are also available from the local information centres.

Wineries open to the public include:

Mount View Road Wineries - Mount View Estate, Jackson's Hill Vineyard, Petersons, Briar Ridge Vineyard, Farrell's Limestone Creek Vineyard
