Merimbula is an attractive
seaside holiday resort. As you approach the township
the brilliant blue of the sea is laid out in front of
you. Pelicans paddle around the lake and the oyster beds.
Located between Tathra and Pambula about 470 km south
of Sydney
on the
south
coast
Merimbula offers fabulous clean beaches, a lagoon
and lakes all
with sparkling
white sand, and edged by bushland that extends
up into the
surrounding mountains.
There is so much to do in Merimbula making
it the ideal family holiday destination. Take a walk
along the boardwalk at Top Lake or enjoy a ride along
the bike path to Pambula. Relax on a boat and explore
the stunning coastline or cast
a line
and
catch a game fish or something for dinner. Go
whale watching, swimming, surfing, wind surfing, canoeing,
diving or bush walking.
Main Beach offers 5 kilometres
of beach ideal for surfing, fishing or beach combing,
Short Point and Tura Beach have exquisite
tea trees, flowering heaths and banksia trees bordering
them. These areas of heathland and forest provide an
ideal habitat for the native wildlife. For bird watchers
this is a wonderful area or just enjoy a bush walk between
the beaches.
From September to November Merimbula
is a wonderful location to watch the whales as they migrate
south to the Antarctic. Fur seals, little penguins and
dolphins are also frequent visitors to the Merimbula
coastline.
There area ideal picnic spots all around
Merimbula with spectacular views. For the golf enthusiast
there are several courses in the area offering magnificent
coastal views.
The hinterland surrounding Merimbula is perfect for bush walkers, or
explore it on a four wheel drive forest tour. The
forests are full of wild flowers including rock orchids
in spring
and
large flocks of birds especially the colourful rainbow
lorikeets
can be found in the tall eucalypts
looking for blossoms.
Merimbula is a very modern holiday resort town with mini golf
and video game arcades. The main activities for visitors,
are fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, lake cruises, scuba
diving, sail boarding, canoeing.
Beaches
There are several beaches in the Merimbula area including Main Beach, Tura Beach,
Middle Beach, Short Point, Spencer Park and Bar Beach. The beaches around
the lake foreshores are gentle and ideal for families with young children.
For surfers there are several beaches along the coast offering the ideal
spot to catch a wave. Some of the beaches are patrolled by life guards during
the summer months and BBQ facilities, changerooms and toilets are available
at some beaches. Tura Beach has a golf course which was
designed by Peter Thomson and features a very luxurious
club house.
Bournda National Park
Bournda National Park is well known for its fossils.
It stretches along the coastline and consists of
steep cliffs and rugged rock outcrops. There are
also fabulous
surfing and fishing beaches within the park.
Magic Mountain Recreation Park
Located on the Tura Beach Rd north of the township of Merimbula is Magic Mountain
Recreation Park. It has 2 water slides, a mini golf course, pools and toboggan
run. There is also several bushwalking tracks, and native flora and fauna in
the surrounding parklands.
Munn Tower House
The Maizena cornflour company, was established by Matthew Munn in 1865. In
about 1870 he constructed 'Courunga' a large stone cottage which is known
as the Munn Tower House. It has become a well known landmark in Merimbula.
Shopping
With several specialty shops offering unique crafts and souvenirs as well as
a good range of fashion shops Merimbula is a shop-a-holics delight .
The Museum and Historic Buildings
Located in Main Street the old stone building which houses the museum was originally
the Public School in 1873. This is believed to be one of only three examples
of a school containing both classrooms and the teacher's residence remaining
in New South Wales.
Wallagoot Lagoon
Ideal for canoeing, sailing, water skiing, power boating, wind surfing, fishing,
swimming or a relaxed family picnic Wallagoot Lagoon is located about 12
kms north of Merimbula.
The climate is mediterranean.

Car
Merimbula is located just off the
Princes Highway about halfway between Melbourne
and Sydney
- From Sydney take the Princes highway
and follow the road along the picturesque coastline.
- From
Melbourne the New South Wales South Coast can be
accessed either via Sale along the coast
using the Princes Highway or via Canberra.
- From Canberra
travel via Queanbeyan along the Kings
Highway.
By Air
Air services are available to Merimbula airport from Sydney and Melbourne. Car
hire is available. Regional Express has services to these airports from Sydney.
