Belmont South is located on the Pacific Highway between the eastern shores of Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean.

Belmont South offers a great base to explore Lake Macquarie, one of the largest coastal saltwater lakes in the Southern Hemisphere. The lake is the ideal location for a family holiday with four patrolled beaches numerous locations for a picnic. the Lake has 92 towns and villages located around it, 29 public boat ramps, 28 public jetties and wharves.

The first European to find Lake Macquarie was Captain William Reid in 1800 when he mistook the channel for the mouth of the Hunter River where he was supposed to collect coal. The lake was known as Reid's Mistake until 1826 when it was renamed in honour of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.
